Storytime Expectations

Caregivers should be an ACTIVE participant.

Sit, sing, & listen to stories together.

  • Sit on the floor with them (if you are able)
  • Model by listening to the stories
  • Sing and dance along

Toys, conversations and cell phones should be enjoyed after storytime.

If your child becomes a distraction to other children or the librarian do your best to encourage appropriate participation. If that isn’t successful, please leave and try again another day and/or try a different storytime.

About Storytimes

We offer a variety of storytimes throughout the year. Storytime at the Bedford Free Public Library is always free of charge and open to all families. You do not need to live in Bedford or sign-up in order to attend storytime. Caregivers are required to attend storytime with their child(ren).

Current research on early literacy and brain development indicates that it is never too early to prepare children for success as readers. Parents and caregivers of newborns, toddlers, and preschoolers play a critical role as their children’s first teachers. With this in mind, storytime is more than reading stories aloud; it is a lively, curiosity-sparking experience for both caregivers and children to interact with literature and to foster the development of early literacy skills. As such, it is always planned and conducted by trained, experienced library staff.
