Solicitations

The Bedford Free Public Library is supported by the taxes of people with varying political, social, and religious beliefs.

The Library is committed to preserving the right to privacy of its patrons. Patrons are entitled to use the Library without being asked to declare their opinions or allegiances to any causes.

In order to maintain the impartiality of the Library and the confidentiality of its patrons, the Board of Library Trustees prohibits the use of library premises for conducting surveys, selling goods or services; soliciting donations or otherwise raising funds; religious proselytizing; or promoting any causes other than those directly related and beneficial to the Library (e.g., the Friends of the Library book sale, or the sale of materials at library-sponsored events) and/or those specifically approved by the Board of Library Trustees.

The public does have the right to solicit signatures for nomination papers and ballot question petitions, though actively approaching people in the Library is prohibited. Library staff will designate a location in the building where people soliciting signatures may sit with documents to be signed. Nomination papers and political petitions may not be left unattended in the Library for signatures as that might be construed as using public funds to support a candidate or issue.

Provision of space does not imply endorsement by the Library.

Adopted by the Board of Library Trustees, 10/14/2025.
