Weekly Challenge #8

Do a chore at home without being asked (August 5th-11th)

It may seem like your house can clean itself, but … it can’t.  To earn this week’s extra bead, do a chore at home before anyone ever asks for your help.

It’s not too late to join Summer Reading!  Kids age 3 through 5th grade can earn beads for reading, and there’s an extra bead each week for completing a challenge.

Weekly Challenge #7

Have you joined Summer Reading?  Kids age 3 through 5th grade can earn a new bead each week by completing a challenge.

July 29 – August 4: Write (or read) your own book

You’ve been reading books all summer, so go write your own!  It can be as short as a few pages or as long as a novel.  Just let your imagination loose as you write down the tale.  (If you’ve already written a book in the past, pull it out for a re-read.  That counts, too!)

3rd Annual Egg Drop

The Egg Drop is back for a third year!    Teams of 1-5 people (kids, tweens, teens, and families are all welcome) build a structure to protect a falling egg, and we test the results by dropping it from the library’s mezzanine balcony.

Kids signed up for Summer Reading will earn a new bead for their lanyard when they participate.

Register your team here

If you don’t want to build a structure, head over for the main event just to watch.  All are welcome to view the event!

Weekly Challenge #6

Have you joined Summer Reading?  Kids age 3 through 5th grade can earn a new bead each week by completing a challenge.

July 22 – July 28: Spend one day with no screens.

This might be a big challenge for you, but say, “No thanks,” to computers, tablets, smartphones, TVs, and any other screens for one day this week.  Try reading, coloring, playing board games, knitting, climbing a tree, cooking, or just about anything but using a screen.

Community Art Wall

Saturday, July 20th, 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing.  To commemorate this event, several local photographers have shared their moon photos with the library.

Special thanks to the Bedford Center for the Arts Photography Group for assisting us with this project.

The community art wall is located directly across from the Children’s Room.

Paintings by Marina Thompson
 July 11-September 11, 2019.

Marina Thompson’s paintings record an abstracted, introspective expression of communication and human interaction. Communication requires kinetic creativity: layers of light, color, texture, balance, nuance, and surprise. Pattern and repetition, rhythm and interruption shape our lives. Geometry bridges the inner and outer worlds adding structure and sense – both ancient and contemporary. The pulse of color and the play of light and texture are constant sources of stimulation. Color creates light, light creates form. Marina’s paintings explore depth, energy and movement with illusions of volume, space, light, and time. The work is colorful, rhythmic, layered. It speaks of sounds, both local and cosmic, while her visual elements are both macroscopic and microscopic.

This exhibit would not be possible without assistance from the Friends of the Bedford Free Public Library.
The public is invited to view the exhibit during regular library hours.

Weekly Challenge #5

Have you joined Summer Reading?  Kids age 3 through 5th grade can earn a new bead each week by completing a challenge.

July 15 – July 21: Try at least 10 pages of a book you think you won’t like.

You never know if that “awful” book just might be “awesome” instead!  Read at least 10 pages of any book that doesn’t appeal to you, and you’ll earn another bead for your lanyard.

See what’s cooking!

The children’s playspace has changed gears again, and the kitchen has reopened! Come see what’s cooking–and make your own contributions from the bins full of play food, dishes, and more.

This week, we’re also exploring how play helps kids think about their feelings. Leave a note on the playspace wall to share your observations!

The new playspace is made possible with federal funds provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and administered by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.

FREEDOM FROM REALITY

Paintings by Kathy DeFlice-Secor

May 2 – July 10, 2019

From the Artist:
The creative process is an involuntary act-it sustains and liberates me.
My images emerge as a response to life. Time, memory, and my environment influence my work. It is in the doing ,the process ,that I navigate these responses,by creating space with line, color, and form. My work is my visual diary, related, obscure, unique, and personal.

This exhibit would not be possible without assistance from the Friends of the Bedford Free Public Library.
The public is invited to view the exhibit during regular library hours.
