Thanks for a great summer!
It was a busy summer at the library, and you helped fill it with “out of this world” fun! All summer long, we saw kids reading, crafting, inventing, and building some truly spectacular beaded lanyards.
All of our amazing summer readers logged 388,272 minutes of reading (that’s over 6,471 hours!) and 1,599 activities. The school-aged kids earned a whopping 25,753 beads for their lanyards.
Thank you, thank you, and thank you again for such a wonderful summer. For everyone heading off to school this week, we wish you the best school year possible. For babies, toddlers, and preschoolers, stop by for our fun weekly storytimes and other activities! Check out the library’s calendar for details.

The fun starts at 6:00pm on the library lawn! Bring a blanket, your dinner, and your dancing feet. We’ll provide the rest.
Weekly Challenge #10
Invent your own Summer Reading challenge (August 19th-22nd)
This one takes some creativity! Plan your challenge and complete it by Thursday to earn 4 solid beads.
Keep those Summer Reading logs coming in! The final day of Summer Reading is Thursday, August 22nd.
Weekly Challenge #9
Watch a bug. Really watch it. (August 12th-18th)
Where is it going? What is it doing? What do you think it’s thinking about? Give it a try, then pick up your bead at the library.
It’s not too late to join Summer Reading! Kids age 3 through 5th grade can earn beads for reading, and there’s an extra bead each week for completing a challenge.
Touch-a-Truck
Come one, come all! Saturday morning, the library will host a free Touch-a-Truck event that’s perfect for young fans of trucks and emergency vehicles. Thanks to support from the Bedford Police, Fire Department, Department of Public Works, and local businesses, kids will be able see all sorts of big vehicles up close.
When you aren’t taking a peek at the trucks, try your hand at face painting, scrub up your toy cars in a mini carwash, chase bubbles, and enjoy a sunny morning together.
Bring your camera for a morning of fun and activities!
- Date: Saturday, August 10th
- Time: 10am to 12pm
- Location: Parking lot behind the library (7 Mudge Way)

Library Butterflies
Monarch caterpillars have returned to the library, and the first butterfly emerged this morning!
We’ve had a few exciting weeks, watching the caterpillars munch, grow, and transform into their gleaming green chrysalises. What a treat to watch this one start its adult life.
You can see how many chrysalises are waiting–and there are more to come. As each butterfly emerges and dries, the library will release it on the lawn. Visitors are welcome to watch, if you happen to be at the library when it’s time to open the cage!
